Is Recreational and Medical Marijuana Legal in DC?

Medical marijuana was legalized in DC in November 2014 and went into effect February 2015, joining the list of other states who had already legalized marijuana. This was a huge step in helping those with medical needs who can benefit from the pain relief marijuana can bring them. Those who have a medical marijuana card may purchase cannabis within the limitations the DC government has put in place. Recreational use of marijuana is not legal in DC. This is something to note whether you live in DC, live nearby or plan to visit soon. While many other states allow recreational use of marijuana or marijuana cards from other states, DC currently only accepts medical marijuana cards from sixteen other states with a functionally equivalent medical marijuana program.

Who Can Buy Medical Marijuana in DC?

Anyone in possession of marijuana must be 21 years of age or older and have a valid DC medical marijuana card. The only exceptions are legal caregivers who can provide assistance or retrieve medical cannabis for those who physically can not get the marijuana on their own or are under age. Cannabis users can have up to four ounces of marijuana in their possession at one time.

Eleven states have now legalized medical and recreational marijuana: Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Alaska, Colorado, Illinois, Michigan, Massachusetts, Vermont, and Maine. Twenty-two states have legalized medical marijuana: Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, Hawaii, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Florida, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Rhode Island, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Maryland. Every year more states are added to one of these lists, and we look forward to the day when every state has legalized marijuana so that everyone can take advantage of the amazing healing benefits of cannabis no matter where you live or travel.

Medical marijuana cards from other states with a functionally equivalent medical marijuana program are allowed in DC. These states are: Colorado, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, Illinois, Michigan, Rhode Island, Delaware, Maine, Montana, Oregon, Florida, Maryland, New Hampshire, and Washington. Recreational use or medical marijuana cards from other states where marjiuana is legal but not on the list above are not permitted in DC.
